The practice is involved in the teaching of medical students from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. A new Medical School has now opened which enales some students to undertake their medical training based at the University of Durham’s Stockton campus.
Training in general practice is becoming more important and many more students are now experiencing the work of general practice for longer periods of their training than in previous years. It is obviously important for students, who will soon become doctors, to gain as much knowledge and practical experience as possible so, from time to time, there may be a medical student sitting in with one of the doctors during surgery. You will be advised of this when you book your apppointment. If you do not wish to see the doctor with the medical student present, when you book your appointment the receptionist will offer you an alternative appointment time or an appointment with another doctor. On some occasions, the student will conduct some consultations without the doctor being present. The student will always refer back to the supervising doctor, who will always see the patient afterwards and be fully responsible for the care of the patient.
